Munro Academy is a growing independent non-profit day school offering positively life-changing Christian education for Pre-Primary to Grade 12 Students.

Summary:
The Elementary ELL Teacher and Recess Supervisor creatively and compassionately leads a small classroom of low-level ELLs (English Language Learners) from various grades. S/he moves from student to student, giving them individual attention and setting them up with language tasks, then returning to them and re-engaging with the content, and so on. When possible, the teacher works with 2-3 students simultaneously. Students are with their homeroom class for Math, Gym, Art, Drama, Music, lunch, and recess. Students from different grades come and go from the ELL classroom at various times throughout the school day. This teacher will also provide 150 minutes/week of English language support for several intermediate ELLs.

This position involves daily direct contact teaching from 9 AM to 3 PM, a daily staff meeting, additional classroom preparation, and supervision. As part of a vibrant teaching team, the Elementary ELL Teacher and Recess Supervisor is responsible to the Principal and the International Director and is hired by the Principal, International Director, and Board.

Responsibilities:
ELL Teacher - 80% of the time
  • Lead a special small classroom of various grades of low-level ELLs - the aim of which is to provide low-level ELLs with an English learning setting that allows them to pick up the basics of English as quickly as possible - then re-enter their regular classroom more able to function in English and participate at closer to grade level. We anticipate students to be in this program for up to 1 school year - with re-entry gradually or the following school year.
  • Ongoing communication with parents, including contact before/after school, e-mails, sending home notes, and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Participation in school community life, potential leadership in extracurricular clubs, and other potential volunteer opportunities.
  • Regular assessment and continuing education.

Recess Supervisor - 20% of the time
  • Supervise elementary students as they play during before-school care, morning and lunch recess, and after-school care.

Qualifications: the ideal candidate will demonstrate:
  • Passion for providing positive life-changing education for International students through integrating the Bible and the person of Jesus into quality education.
  • Love of students!
  • Applicable education - i.e. undergraduate degree and TESL certification
  • Extensive and varied experience teaching low-level English language learners in elementary grades - ie Pre Primary to Grade 5
  • Vision and capability to create a welcoming learning environment for a small number of low-level ELLs to spend the bulk of their school day - as well as engaging with several intermediate ELLs intermittently throughout the day
  • Ability to keep several students at different grade levels meaningfully engaged with content that will effectively and quickly improve their English proficiency
  • Ability to collaborate and coordinate with classroom teachers to facilitate the ELLs' progress and success in subjects provided by the classroom teacher/s
  • Capacity to provide some resource learning in the small classroom context.
  • Active involvement in local church/parish.
  • Ability to contribute to unity in Christ’s body in teaching as a member of staff representing the breadth and wealth of Cape Breton’s denominations.
  • Commitment to Munro Academy’s community vision as outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook.
  • Successful completion of required criminal/abuse registry checks.
  • Demonstrated positive classroom management abilities for this age group.

  • Salary is determined by an education/experience salary grid starting at $35,430/year (paid biweekly).

  • $1,000/year for post-bachelor degree continuing education (approved by the principal)
  • Bursary for up to 50% of tuition of students enrolled at Munro Academy.
